What Castor Oil Does for Your Hair (And Why It's in Every Bearsville Shampoo Bar)

Castor oil is having a moment. Google searches for it have surged over the past year, driven largely by social media claims about dramatic hair growth transformations. Some of those claims are overblown. The reality is more interesting — and more useful — than the hype suggests.

Here's what castor oil actually does, what the science says, and why it earns its place in a well-made shampoo bar.

What Castor Oil Is

Castor oil is pressed from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. Its defining characteristic is an unusually high concentration of ricinoleic acid — a rare fatty acid that makes up roughly 90% of its composition. That single compound is responsible for most of castor oil's functional properties: its anti-inflammatory behavior, its antimicrobial effects, and its ability to coat and condition the hair shaft.

It's also exceptionally thick and viscous — denser than most carrier oils — which is both its strength and, in some applications, its limitation.

What It Actually Does for Hair

The honest answer is that castor oil's reputation as a dramatic hair growth accelerator outpaces the science. No large-scale clinical trials have confirmed that castor oil significantly speeds up hair growth beyond its natural rate. Anyone claiming otherwise is overstating the evidence.

What castor oil does reliably, and what the research does support, is this:

Scalp health. Ricinoleic acid has genuine anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Applied to the scalp, it helps calm irritation, reduce dryness, and create a healthier environment for hair to grow. Healthy scalp conditions don't create new follicles — but they do allow existing ones to function better.

Reduced breakage. Castor oil's fatty acids coat the hair shaft and fill gaps in the cuticle, making strands more elastic and resilient. Hair that breaks less retains more length over time — which is where a lot of the "growth" people experience actually comes from.

Improved condition and shine. The same coating effect that reduces breakage also gives hair a healthier, more reflective appearance. Hair looks and feels thicker because the strands are better protected — not because anything has changed structurally.

Why It Works Well in a Shampoo Bar

Applied directly to the scalp as a pure oil, castor oil's thickness can be difficult to work with — too much and it sits heavily, difficult to rinse and potentially clogging. In a shampoo bar formula, it works differently.

Combined with a base of saponified organic oils — coconut, olive, sustainable palm, shea butter — castor oil becomes part of a balanced formula that delivers its scalp-conditioning and strand-strengthening properties through a normal wash-and-rinse routine. No separate treatment step, no mess. Just a shampoo bar that cleans thoroughly and leaves hair in noticeably better condition.

The Bearsville Shampoo Bars

Every Bearsville shampoo bar is formulated with castor oil alongside coconut oil and shea butter for a rich lather that cleans without stripping. All four are cold process, made without harsh chemicals, parabens, or sulfates.

Balsam & Mint — earthy balsam, brisk mint, and cedar. Refreshing and grounded.

Fresh Cut Pine — freshly-split pine, aspen bark, and bright citrus. Clean and outdoorsy.

Lime & Bergamot — bright, zesty lime and bergamot. An ultra-fresh citrus lather.

Peppermint & Herbs — cool peppermint layered with tea tree, rosemary, and lavender. The kind of clean you can feel.

All four are available individually or as a set in the Shampoo Bar Bundle.
